Transformational Leadership Series (2019-2020)

Serve Wisconsin offers a variety of trainings for its AmeriCorps members and programs, including a thematic training series for AmeriCorps members throughout their term of service. During the 2019-2020 program year, the training series focused on topics surrounding transformational leadership.

2019-2020 Series overview

The Transformational Leadership Training Series invited invites AmeriCorps member to engage in their own journey and transformation as they become leaders who enrich lives and communities. This training was an opportunity to provide AmeriCorps members values-centered leadership training that they can use to become effective leaders now and in the future.

The training consisted of a kick-off session at the 2019 AmeriCorps Opening Ceremony, six podcast episodes, and three reflection sessions.

AmeriCorps Leadership Series, Episode 1 - What is Transformational Leadership

  • In this first episode of the Transform Your Leadership Podcast, Dr. Gee shares on what Transformational Leadership is, how it differs from other forms of leadership, and gives some practical examples of what it looks like for individuals to be transformed, and to transform the systems, structures, and communities which they find themselves.

AmeriCorps Leadership Series, Episode 2 - Your Story Informs Your Leadership

  • In episode 2 of the Transform Your Leadership Podcast, Dr. Gee shares of the importance of a leaders knowing their own story, and letting their own story shape their leadership and ability to connect and relate to the individuals they lead and serve. Rather than seeing people as objects to be fixed, Transformational Leadership sees people as individuals to be understood and journeyed with. Therefore, we must know our own stories in order to serve and lead others in transformation. Listen in on Dr. Gee share about his own story, and what can result when we as leaders lean into that and are transformed ourselves. Then begin to reflect on how your own story influences the areas you are passionate about.

  • n this third episode of the Transform Your Leadership Podcast, Dr. Gee invites you to reflect on your story to see how it has the potential to shape and impact the systems and structures which you find yourself. Often in social services, we have not taken into account how the very systems we are a part of may be unintentionally hindering the very people we hope to serve. In order to promote real change in systems and structures, you must consider the 4 P's: Personal, Procedural, Policy, and Program. In doing so, we can begin to see how our own stories, creativity, and passion can truly change systems and structures for the better.

Dr. Gee breaks down some of the most important strategies at maintaining your own health and care for yourself, in order for you to do the work you do for the community and others both better and more effectively.

AmeriCorps Leadership Series, Episode 5 - Transformational Leadership In Difficult Job Situations

  • In Episode 5 of the Transform Your Leadership Podcast, Dr. Alex Gee focuses on how to function in an organization when you struggle with your boss, your organization's practices, and when you are frustrated or disagree with your site. Dr. Gee talks about bringing self-awareness, owning your own issues, and healthy practices of confronting and working through organizational conflicts. Additionally, Dr. Gee interviews a former Americorps member and site supervisor to discuss how to appropriately handle these issues. Remember, these difficult situations often provide some of the most significant opportunities for the development of transformational leadership.
